The development of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution results in changes in many areas, including architectural designs. Things such as the strength of a building, its concept, and its design are taken into consideration such that it aligns with the character of the generation today. The Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Architecture Study Program (Prodi) responds to this condition by inviting its students to be proactive in handling problems among the citizens. As aspiring architects, UPH students are not only charged to understand concepts and theories, but to also dive directly to the field and to provide solutions to designs that will answer the needs of the generation. After being equipped with four mandatory courses namely Basic Studio, Architecture Design Studio 1, Architecture Design Studio 3, and Architecture Design Studio 5, students will be asked to create a design according to the theme provided by instructors as their final project (TA). The TAs that are around 200 in total are exhibited and reviewed directly by instructors and twenty professional architects. The exhibition was held from 3 to 6 December 2019 at Gedung B, fourth floor, UPH Lippo Village campus.Stephanie Sutikno (2016) and Bobby Wijaya (2018) exhibited their works in this exhibition. Through their works, they were able to answer problems faced by the general public in the 4.0 era.Stephanie took a case study of a remote city called Songjeong-dong in South Korea. Bobby, on the other hand, took a case study for a millennial single-family living at the Gading Serpong complex, Tangerang. The concept design produced by Stephanie is based on the integration or connectivity of one place to another.Stephanie said, “The people living in this city are mostly elders and the buildings are old as well, making it an unpopular place to live in among youth. Therefore, I am doing an urban regeneration project. I make three proposals: First is urban farming because the locals love to sell fruits and vegetables from their garden; Second is a textile museum because this area was previously a textile industry; Third is a pedestrian walk zone.”The concepts of her three proposals of public spaces have their important characteristics, which are integrated with surroundings, promotion of locality, and sustainability. She hopes that her design can help Songjeong-dong city rejuvenate and to answer any existing problems.Bobby Wijaya, on the other hand, had a focus to answer the problems faced by a millennial single family. The research he has done shows that a wall within a house will become a barrier for families to interact.Bobby explained, “As we know, generation Z’s are intimate with their technologies. This makes them independent and individualistic. According to my research, a wall in a house is a factor that causes the individualistic emergence. From that, I try to design a home that allows one room to be viewed from another room. Therefore, it is easier to access and allows family members to have more interactions.”All of the students’ work is guided and supported by their instructors. For example, support comes in the example of collaboration between UPH Architecture and Soongsil University from South Korea. Students of UPH Architecture were invited to visit and create designs for remote cities of South Korea.Students also receive support through UPH networking with professional architects. These professional architects were at the exhibition to review every student’s work. Therefore, students are enriched academically and in networking in their fields.Read More
UPH, BEI, and PT Sucor Sekuritas Presents Investment Gallery for Students and Instructors.
Tangerang, 11 December 2019 – To help students and instructors understand more about funding and investment, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) presented the corner of stock exchange named UPH Investment Gallery (Galeri Investasi UPH). The facility was made official on 11 December 2019 at Gedung F UPH Lippo Village campus by the UPH Chancellor Dr. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, M.Eng.Sc., PT Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI) Director of Development Hasan Fawzi, and President Director of PT Sucor Sekuritas Bagus Abimanyu Lulu, SE., Ak., MA., CA., CPA. The facility is UPH’s commitment to creating leading human resources (SDM) and the ability to compete within the nation and internationally in funding and investment.UPH Chancellor welcomed enthusiastically and said, “We welcome the collaboration between UPH and BEI and Sucor through the Investation Gallery. Through this facility, we can see the policies and perspectives around the capital market nationally and internationally. Therefore, this is not only about theory, but it is also applicative.”After making it official, there was a signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to the activities performed by UPH, BEI, and PT Sucor Sekuritas, covering educational programs of funding and investment that presents professionals from BEI and Sucor Sekuritas as speakers, data facilities for research and students’ final projects, and other activity programs such as Sucor online trading application training called SPOT (Sucor Personal Online Trading), group study on capital market, and visits to the IDX.William Tjong, B.Sc., MBA., Ph.D. – Director of UPH Investment Gallery said that this investment gallery will answer the needs of both student and instructor.Tjong said, “In this Investment Gallery, students will be given the right education about the right funding and investment. The students can also create a final research project using the data accessed from the BEI website, both real-time and historical data.”This aligns with PT BEI’s focus to introduce the capital market through the investment gallery. Fawzi believes that the campus is the right place to introduce the capital market to the students.Fawzi said, “UPH becomes the 17th investment gallery at Banten. There are 472 investment galleries in total that were made official across Indonesia. With cooperation between three parties, we hope that we can increase the understanding of courtesy services. We want students and instructors to not only understand the theories but to also start investing step by step until they are good at it. Students can also apply their theories that were facilitated by us and to dig deep research topic potentials in the financial sector.”Lulu added that the knowledge of the capital market must be taught at an early age.Lulu said, “As of October 2019, the number of investors in the capital market was only 0.9% of the 268 million population of Indonesia. This is still a very small number. Therefore, we hope that the Investment Gallery will become the means to introduce the capital market in the academic field and to practice simulations and do transactions. UPH is the fifth educational institute that has an Investment Gallery as a result of collaboration with Sucor and BEI.”In addition to benefits for the students, instructors are given the ease of access to data from various supporting parties. The data that can be accessed will be used by instructors as research and educational material for the students and the public. This way, it is counted as community service (PKM).In the future, the UPH Investment Gallery will collaborate with UPH Business Incubator to facilitate students in receiving funding through the BEI incubation program.Read More
Tryout Sport Scholarship Gives Students Opportunity to Achieve UPH Scholarship.
Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) strives to give opportunities to high school students to join UPH in various ways, including sports. Students with exceptional skills in sports have an opportunity to achieve UPH scholarship through a direct selection at the Sports Scholarship Tryout. The tryout was held on 7 December 2019 at UPH Lippo Village campus.Andromeda, UPH Sports Department Manager, said, “The tryout was aimed to attract talents with similar vision and mission as UPH and the Sports Department. It is also to introduce what UPH Sports is like, from its values, trainers, and students who join as student-athletes.”This is the first time the sports scholarship selection was held by the Marketing and Admissions Department in collaboration with the UPH Sports Department, in hopes of providing more opportunities for students to participate at UPH.Phoa Denny Oswaldo, UPH Student Consultant Manager, said, “The usual scholarship giving is through talent scouting or competition, which can be limited. This allows some potential talents to be overlooked. Therefore, through the tryout at UPH, they can directly showcase their abilities.”Before judging, around ninety participants who come from different schools received a direct message from the UPH Sports Director, Stephen Metcalfe. The message contains knowledge on how to become a student-athlete. The main thing that each student must have is the discipline in all aspects of life, as well as the willingness to make a sacrifice. The tryout is open for Grade 12 students who are talented in five sports areas, which are basketball, soccer, futsal, badminton, and swimming. They will receive assessments from trainers in each area. Andro also added that to pass the selection process, students not only need academic talent and skill in sports, but also a good character. With this activity, UPH hopes that participants will show their best skills and efforts and to understand the values emphasized by the UPH Sports Department. As a continuation of this activity, the participants who will continue to the next step will be announced. For students talented in sports and eager to join UPH, they are welcome to join as a student-athlete and to develop their sports talent, may that be through the regular or scholarship routes.Participant TestimonyGrady Cahyadi – SMAK 1 BPK Penabur – Basketball Tryout Participant“This is the first time I participated in a university tryout. Initially, I was nervous because of discipline and fatigue, but in the end, I was able to follow the tryout process. I was grateful to be given this chance and to meet new friends. I hope that there will be another tryout from UPH.”Liana – SMK Unggul Sakti – Badminton Tryout Participant“Participating in the sports tryout at UPH was fun. We were welcomed warmly and throughout the tryout, we were graded fairly. We were guided since the start to finish so we were never confused about the process. I hope I can pass this tryout and join UPH.”Read More
UPH Collaborates with World Edupia Opening Intensive Korean Language Class to Accelerate Study Period in South Korea
On November 5, 2019, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with World Edupia for a Korean Language Learning Program for students who planned to continue their studies in South Korea and anyone who wants to learn the Korean Language. The Korean Language Learning Program, managed by Pelita Learning Hub (PLH) Department, is accessible for both UPH civitas academica and also the public.World Edupia itself collaborates with Hanyang University, Korea, to provide an effective, advanced, and innovative learning program, and also to provide students with certified native speaker teachers. The Korean Language Learning Program offered by PLH is divided into two types: academic class and general class. In the academic class, High School graduates who plans to continue their studies in South Korea will undergo academic learning process with formal Korean, which enables them to follow the learning pace in Korean universities. This program will run for a year, with a total duration of four hours per day. After a year of learning, students will have to take a Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK). If they managed to pass, they will receive a certificate that they can use while studying in Korea. This program saves a large amount of money, which might reach an astonishing amount for High School students who want to learn Korean in South Korea. If the prospective students are not a native speaker, they are required to take the class for a year before they can continue learning in university. The collaboration program between PLH and World Edupia will help Indonesian students to save up a lot of money, because the cost of learning Korean in PLH is only a third of the total amount in which a student would have to pay if they decide to take the program in South Korea. On the other hand, the general class is a non-intensive class which focuses on basic, everyday Korean language skills. This class is opened for the public, both students, staffs, and other people. The MoU signing was represented by BK Choi - CEO of World Edupia, and Bo Kyung Kim, Senior Manager International Affairs of Hanyang University. UPH Rector, Dr. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, M.Eng.Sc. and UPH Vice-President for Marketing, External Cooperation, and Business Development, Stephanie Riady, B.A., M.Ed. were also present as the representatives of UPH.In the same occasion, the Rector of UPH conveyed his hopes for the program. He hopes that this program can facilitate those want to continue their studies in South Korea, especially for those who lives around the Karawaci area.“This program will also strengthen the relationship between Indonesia and South Korea,” the Rector added. This program will start in the next semester and has a target of 100 students per semester. Hopefully, this program can facilitate students to have an access to learning in South Korea with the same quality, but with a more affordable cost.Read More
