Natural Dyed Crawling Path

The use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry can be harmful to the environment, especially those with chemical structure that is difficult to degrade. Therefore, this study aims to explore the possibilities of using natural mordant (bio mordant) for producing dyes that can be environment-friendly. Using aqueous method to extract the color and 3 methods for mordating, which is pre, simultaneous and post. The materials used in this exploration includes hemp, calico, and various types of cotton, with the natural dye sources coming from avocado skin and pit, dragon fruit skin, mangosteen skin, red cabbage, turmeric, onion skin, spinach, suji leaves, butterfly pea flower and mulberries. Based on the characteristics of natural dye produced, one suitable product is soft toy for babies, with diverse, soft and soothing color. In conclusion, natural dyes are assessed to have a fairly good potential in providing environment-friendly alternative. For more detailed research on this, click here. This product is made by Casey Gunawan, one of UPH’s Product Design student.

Prancangan Rumah Tinggal by Gary Delfino Yap

The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Weapons According to International Humanitarian Law

One of those includes artificial intelligence which is an increasingly used and developed form of technology born sometime in the 1950s. The term of “intelligence” itself means “the ability to acquire and apply different skills and knowledge to solve a given problem” and the use of “general mental capacity to solve, reason, and learn various situations”. Meanwhile, “AI” can simply be defined as “the theory and development of computer systems to carry out tasks normally requiring human intelligence”. The foundation of AI’s development began in 1950, by mathematician Alan Turing who posed the question of whether machines could think like humans did, and how. Turing published a paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” and established the “Turing Test”, which is designed to determine whether or not a computer is “intelligent” by testing if they can imitate an input given by a human and produce an output that human users cannot identify as coming from a machine. Even within a small nation such as Singapore, they are currently working on incorporating AI into their defense structure to “maximize combat effectiveness with minimum manpower.” Its development is rampant due to its promising contribution for the military in the future which could make work safer for the army, like its ability to spot and detect objects that are out of human view, helping personnel make decisions through analysis, increase accuracy in targeting, and more. Due to the potential damages and harm to human life, many experts including Elon Musk and the three co-founders of AI’s company “Google DeepMind” have pledged not to develop AI weapons that could create devastating results. They, and thousands of other AI experts, have opposed the existence of automated weapons that rely on AI without sufficient human control and constantly warns the public of the repercussions, whether moral or pragmatic, in enforcing such weapons. Still, there are no specific internationally agreed rules or conventions about AI in weapons yet. A disharmony in agreement or understanding about what can be used in the AI battle field and how much human intervention should be applied could result fatally.

Simpang - Modern meets Traditional by Senlih Yoana

Home Definition A place that functions as the main residence that provides the needs of its residents according to their habits and activities. A home should reflect the identity of the occupants, which means they are the only ones who can consider a place to be called "home" and not just a "house". Design Concept Inspired by nature and the richness of Bali culture, adding unique character to modern design through materials and colors. Exposing natural textures and earthy color tones, giving an opportunity to harmonize with nature, which is mainly the concept of Balinese interior as a tribute for "Sang Pencipta". Tri Angga Philosophy Tri Angga means "three parts"; 'utama', 'madya', and 'nista'. Utama means head, as the sacred place it is located in mountains; Madya means middle is where Balinese live; Nista means below, located in the sea. The concept is modernized to 3 zones without changing the order of Tri Angga Philosophy: ● Private zone: where each resident gets their own private room, the only place where they can express their emotion. Therefore, it is located in the innermost of the house. ● Semi-public zone: the "heart" of the house, located exactly in the middle as the meeting point for the family members, supporting the family bonding activities. ● Public zone: the outermost part of the house, to welcome the guests. Social Interaction What is a home without family? Space to support family activities is crucial. Movie time at midnight in the living room, attempting Youtube recipes together in the pantry, birthday celebration in the dining area; those kinds of social interactions give a family opportunities to spend quality time together. Let Your Guests Know You, and Your Works! Welcoming the guests in the foyer, surrounded with natural ornaments and textures. Orchids placed above the traditional rattan and wood combination credenza tell the resident's fondness of nature. Located next to the foyer, this main floor study room also acts as gallery to showcase resident's personal artworks.

The office design departed from considerations of one of UNESCO's core values, respect for diversity. The design encourages different working styles and ensuresthat the officework for as many people as possible by creating an inclusive workspace that accomodate choice and practicality. Rectangular form represents familiarity, formality, and dependability to demonstrate professional competence. Hexagonal form represents community, creation, and balance to encourage harmonious relations between colleagues, both professionally and personally. White, brown, grey and blue are used as the main colors to create contrast throughout the office to easily differentiate areas based on the working modes (focus, collaborative, social, and learn). Also making it accessible, even for people with disabilities. The design mainly used translucent polycarbonate sheets as partitions to highlight translucency; being transparent while still maintaining every employee’s focus and privacy. The use of this material also plays an important role in designing a sustainable office.
